Shanghai

3 Days staying in Shanghai
11-13 August 2007

After going to Badaling and Longqingxia, we on 2 took the night train for 11 hours from Beijing to Shanghai. 1 way ticket cost almost 500RMB for a place in sleeper car. There are cheaper trains, but they would take much longer than 11 hours. In Shanghai, we stayed in Effendy's appartment, near the Caobao Lu subway station.

Lucky took me to the Shanghai Normal University, the place where he learns chinese. We ate in the University cafetaria, which was another nice experience eating student food for 5 RMB Well in Shanghai I had more opportunity to enjoy the city.

Unlike in Beijing, in Shanghai I didn't go to any big tourism attraction. I also had the experiece to walk completely alone and was forced to do some conversation with the chinese people.

Badaling Great Wall and Longqingxia Ravine

One day trip to Badaling and Longqingxia
Friday, 10 August 2007

Badaling

Lóngqìngxía

These 2 places are located not very far from Beijing and can be visited within 1 day. Badaling is surely already well known as the most visited part of the Great Wall of China. Longqingxia ravine is also quite popular among the local chinese tourist and is known as "the little Guilin". We rented 2 cars for 12 people and they cost total 1000RMB including the drivers. We left Beijing at 7 in the morning, otherwise we would be trap in the traffic jam.

Beijing

Visiting the imperial heritage sites in Beijing
2 August 2007 - 19 August 2007

Beihai Park
Forbidden City
Summer Palace

The Beihai Park is the first imperial site I visited in Beijing. It was an imperial garden and now it is not a public park and you must buy ticket to enter the park. Inside the park you can find Temple, small gardens, the 9 Dragon Screen, some chinese pavilions and across the lake, the White Pagoda.

Not far from there is the most popular site in Beijing, the Forbidden City (The chinese call it Gùg?ng, the former palace). It is big, although we skipped a lot of the buildings, it still took us more than 5 hours. The main entrance is connected with the Tiananmen square, but on that day they blocked it because of the 1 year Olympiade count down.

The last imperial site is the Summer Palace (Yíhé Yuán). You probably have to spend 1 day to visit the whole area. We just able to saw the Chinese Opera Theather, then walked to the top of Longevity Hill, walked down through the Long Corridor, watched the Marble Boat, cross the river and took the exit near the 17 Arch bridge.

Resonant Sand Gorge - Kubuqi Desert, Inner Mongolia

3 Days Bus Trip to Inner Mongolia (Nei Mengge)
4-6 August 2007

Early morning in 5th August, we left the Mongolian Grassland camp. It was another 5 or 6 hours journey in the Bus to the desert. We passed the Baotou city, the next big city close to the desert and crossed the yellow river.

2nd Destination - Resonant Sand Gorge (Xiangsha Wan)

The Resonant Sand Gorge (Xiangsha Wan) area is already well build for tourism purpose. It is located directly on the side of the Kubuqi dessert and has a good hotel, restaurant, shops and very clean public facility.

To go directly to the desert, we took the cable car and pay 80 RMB for the return ticket. Then paying another 10 RMB for the shoe cover before you really can walk in the desert. The main attraction there is riding the camel to the desert. With the 2 hours trip, you can go to see sand sculptures and a small oase in the middle of the desert.

The Huitengxile Grassland in Inner Mongolia

3 Days Bus Trip to Inner Mongolia (??? Nèi M?ngg?)
4-6 August 2007

I and my friends took the 3 days bus tour to Inner Mongolia. The amazing tour is quite cheap. It cost around 500 RMB, including the bus trip, 2 nights stay and all meals.

1st Destination - Huitengxile Grassland

After more than 6 hours in the bus from Beijing, we reached the first destination on this tour, the grassland. On the way through the grassland, beside watching the invinite amount of wind turbines, there are many semi-modern mongolian style "camps". It shows that the grassland is already a popular destination, at least for the local tourist.

The camp where we stayed was located quite far from the main street, however the infrastructure is good with enough electricity and water in the decent toilets. There are quite a lot of permanent rooms and "yurt" (tents) in the mongolian style to rent on the camp. Sleeping in the tent was quite comfortable since they also provide thick matress and enough blankets.
