The Huitengxile Grassland in Inner Mongolia
3 Days Bus Trip to Inner Mongolia (??? Nèi M?ngg?)
4-6 August 2007
I and my friends took the 3 days bus tour to Inner Mongolia. The amazing tour is quite cheap. It cost around 500 RMB, including the bus trip, 2 nights stay and all meals.
1st Destination - Huitengxile Grassland
After more than 6 hours in the bus from Beijing, we reached the first destination on this tour, the grassland. On the way through the grassland, beside watching the invinite amount of wind turbines, there are many semi-modern mongolian style "camps". It shows that the grassland is already a popular destination, at least for the local tourist.
The camp where we stayed was located quite far from the main street, however the infrastructure is good with enough electricity and water in the decent toilets. There are quite a lot of permanent rooms and "yurt" (tents) in the mongolian style to rent on the camp. Sleeping in the tent was quite comfortable since they also provide thick matress and enough blankets.
The main attraction in the grassland is of course to ride the horse and enjoying the view of the vast grassland. If all the windturbine were not there, it was as if you are somewhere far from any civilization. From our camp, we took the 2 hours riding for 100 RMB to see the "Ao Bao". Aobao is the mongolian stone heap, on top of the hill, which has religious meaning and is used as place to perform ceremony.
In the afternoon there were several shows to see. It started with the horse race, which last less than 2 minutes, then followed with the wrestling performance. At night there were dancing, music and singing performances around the bonfire.
The food served in the camp was quite good. There were vegetables, bread, rice and plenty of lamb meat. Before the dinner, the girls served the traditional mongolian spirits to everyone, during the others performed some show on preparing the grilled lamb.
